Field Interpretation in Nepal: Challenges Beyond the Conference Hall

Simultaneous interpretation is often associated with conference halls, soundproof booths, quality audio systems, and carefully arranged seating. But when interpretation moves into the field, the work becomes a very different experience.

From 15–19 September 2026, Square Services Pvt. Ltd. provided live interpretation for Heifer Nepal International during a field visit by donors from Heifer International USA to the Palpa project area. Although recent flooding in Rasuwa had created uncertainty around travel to Nepal, the visit proceeded as the project site in Palpa remained unaffected.

Interpreting Beyond the Conference Hall

Field interpretation presents challenges that cannot always be anticipated in a controlled conference environment. On farms, interpreters must adapt to uneven terrain, background noise, limited audio equipment, and sometimes the absence of suitable seating.

The priority is to find a position where the speaker can be heard clearly, even when the physical setup is far from ideal. Maintaining concentration and accuracy under these conditions requires flexibility, stamina, and experience.

During the visit, Akbare chilli farmers and smallholder farmers shared their struggles, experiences, and success stories. Interpreting these personal accounts requires more than linguistic accuracy. It demands careful attention to the speakers’ emotions, meaning, and intended message.

Switching Between Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation

The visit also included recorded interviews with a video production crew. To avoid overlapping voices in the recordings, our interpreter switched from simultaneous to consecutive interpretation, allowing each speaker to finish before the interpretation was delivered.

This requires a different set of skills. Interviewees may speak at length, recounting detailed experiences that must be accurately conveyed in another language. Effective note-taking, active listening, memory, and the ability to identify key messages are essential to preserving the substance and nuance of their accounts.

The ability to switch between interpreting modes is particularly valuable in development projects, where field visits may combine informal conversations, group discussions, and recorded interviews.

Making Every Story Heard

As donors listened to farmers describe their challenges and achievements, the conversations offered a closer look at the realities behind the project’s work.

For interpreters, assignments like these are a reminder that effective communication is not confined to formal meeting rooms. Whether working on a farm or in a conference hall, the goal remains the same: to ensure that people can share their experiences and that their messages are understood across languages.

At Square Services Pvt. Ltd., we provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation for conferences, field visits, and development projects in Nepal. Our work adapts to the setting, the speakers, and the communication needs of each assignment.
